Its easy to fall into the trap of doing a project the "least expensive" way. But, is the quote the only cost involved? Not usually. There are many facets and people involved in any project and each one should be given value and included in your final project cost. Creating a line item budget can help to determine the true cost of any project. Here are just a few examples:

Did you create the project using software that is not the industry standard?
If so, are you including in the estimated cost, your time involved, and are you prepared to spend extra to correct any problems before going to print? Printers usually have a pre-press department that can charge anywhere from $65.00 to $100.00+ per hour to correct any quality issues.

What type of finishing/bindery work needs to be completed for the job to be finalized?
If you have a project that has 4 pieces to be inserted into a 9" x 12" envelope and then mailed, who will do this? If you are using volunteers i.e. yourself, family, friends, etc., how long will it take them to collate, stuff, address, and mail? What is their time worth? That cost should be factored in. A solution would be to have a reputable mailhouse give you an estimated price to complete the task.
